The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is proposing to revise the U.S. standards for canned lima bean, canned mushrooms, pickles and green olives to remove the term “midget.”
AMS would replace “midget” with “petite” in the canned lima bean, canned mushroom and pickle standards, and remove “midget” from the green olive standards and use the existing alternative term “petite.” AMS also proposes to replace the two-term grading system (dual nomenclature) with a single term to describe each quality level in the canned lima bean, canned mushroom and green olive standards, and make minor editorial changes that conform to those made in other grade standards.
The proposed rule for this action was published in the Federal Register Aug. 13, 2018. Written comments must be received by Oct. 12, 2018. Comments should be submitted online at www.regulations.gov, faxed to (540) 361-1199 or mailed to the USDA, Specialty Crops Inspection Division, 100 Riverside Parkway, Suite 101, Fredericksburg, VA 22406.
