The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking nominees for the National Peanut Board to replace one producer member and one alternate for the States of Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue will appoint individuals to succeed members whose terms expire Dec. 31, 2019. Appointed members and alternates will serve three-year terms.
Members and alternates are nominated by producers or producer groups within their respective states. A state peanut nomination meeting was held Jan. 30, 2019 for New Mexico. Other state peanut nomination meetings are scheduled for Arkansas on Feb. 19 and Oklahoma on March 14.
For information about state nomination meetings and the application process, contact Maria Mehok, the board’s Vice President of Finance and Compliance, at (678) 424-5750 or mymehok@nationalpeanutboard.org. The National Peanut Board is industry-funded and supports the national marketing and promotion of peanuts. The board is composed of 12 producer members and their alternates for the primary peanut-producing states and one at-large member who also serves as an alternate for the minor peanut-producing states.
Since 1966, Congress has authorized 22 industry-funded research and promotion boards to provide a framework for agricultural industries to pool their resources and combine efforts to develop new markets, strengthen existing markets and conduct important research and promotion activities. The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) provides oversight, paid for by industry assessments, which helps ensure fiscal accountability and program integrity.
More information is available on the National Peanut Board page on the AMS website and on the board’s website, www.nationalpeanutboard.org.
