The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today announced $4.8 million in funding for the Micro-Grants for Food Security Program (MGFSP). This new program will assist agricultural agencies or departments in eligible states and territories to increase the quantity and quality of locally grown food through small-scale gardening, herding and livestock operations. MGFSP is authorized by the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (Farm Bill), and the grant period for agreements between the eligible applicants and AMS is four years.
AMS will award grants to eligible states and territories through a non-competitive application process. Eligible applicants include agricultural agencies or departments in Alaska, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Hawaii, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau and the United States Virgin Islands.
Eligible states and territories will competitively distribute subawards to eligible entities in communities within their areas that have significant levels of food insecurity and import a significant quantity of food.
