The purpose of this project is to provide food assistance to the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana Tribal Community. The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is a Federally Recognized Tribe located three miles North of Elton in Southwest Louisiana. Most of our members live in Allen Parish with the remaining residing in surrounding communities and adjacent parishes.
The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is applying for a Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program allocation to procure and distribute domestic food to our underserved community. Our aim is to support Native American families in our area who are struggling with the rising cost of food. We will be partnering with our tribal agriculture department as procurement agent from local producers, minimally process and package product, and assist in distributing to tribal families.
In doing this, we will be creating and expanding economic opportunities for local producers. The increase of local food producers will help build a more resilient and equitable local economy by placing emphasis on buying from these businesses. Our goal is to address food insecurity, support local producers while providing fresh food to the community members, and strengthening our burgeoning agriculture department within the larger local economy.
