There are no U.S. grade standards for Carambola. These instructions have been developed by the Specialty Crops Inspection Division to assist officially licensed inspectors in making inspections, writing certificates and to assist in the proper identification of specialty type fruits and vegetables.
Carambola (Starfruit, Star Apple) is better known as "star fruit" because of its cross-section appearance. It has been cultivated in Southeastern Asia and other tropical areas. It can have a very sour to very sweet taste and can be eaten fresh. It can be very acid to sweet and have a pleasant fragrance, somewhat like the quince.
