Order Authority and Regulations

The marketing order authorizes quality regulations; research and promotion programs; and markings, pack, and container regulations for onions grown in the Walla Walla Valley of Southeast Washington and Northeast Oregon.  The order went into effect on May 24, 1995, and amended on February 1, 1999.   • Quality Regulations:  The marketing order authorizes grade, size, maturity, and quality regulations to maintain onion quality shipped to consumers.  These quality regulations are ensured by mandatory inspection.

  • Research and Promotion:  The marketing order authorizes production research, marketing promotion and development, to include paid advertising. Projects in these areas are currently active.

  • Markings, pack, and container regulations:  The marketing order authorizes regulations on the marking or labeling, size, capacity, and weight of the containers used to ship onions to market.

Committee Structure

The Walla Walla Sweet Onion Marketing Committee administers the order locally and consists of six producer and three handler members and their alternates and one public member and alternate. Committee members serve staggered 3-year terms of office that begin June 1. One-third of the producer and handler members are nominated each year. Members are limited to two 3-year terms of office. Producer and handler members are nominated by producers and handlers, respectively, at an industry-wide nomination meeting. View a list of members & alternates.
