The Tribe is requesting $600,000.00 from the LFPA program to buy locally produced food items to be distributed in the underserved community of Flandreau, South Dakota.
If chosen as a recipient of LFPA funds, the Tribe will support socially disadvantaged producers by purchasing their products and distributing them monthly to the underserved community of Moody County. Since the Tribe purchased freezers for the previous food security programs, we are also well equipped to store frozen foods. The Tribe would publish, in all available media, information regarding the food distribution time and location.
Tribal personnel are well able to complete the steps needed to ensure the food is ready for distribution. Each month volunteers, Tribal members and Grace Moore staff will assemble the boxes as much as possible the day prior and stack them on pallets. These pallets would then be moved to the FSST Office where frozen meats are stored and added to the boxes as they are issued. There is ample room in the FSST parking lot to allow people to drive through and receive the distribution. The entry and exit points will be clearly labeled and office staff will be notified to park away from this activity. Traffic cones may be utilized if needed for safety.
These distributions will be announced by Newspaper, website and Tribal Newsletter and held at regular times, like 2nd Wed at 5 pm, for example. Packaging and non-food expenses will be at Tribal expense.
